This week in Science

Vicky (SALT) joined Turret for an experiment this week. This time, it was ‘Water Fireworks.’ The class enjoyed measuring the different liquids and observing the reaction as the oil was poured into the glass with the water. These collaborative lessons allow us to combine a practical and sensory activity with a reading and writing activity—and the class really enjoyed it!

This week has seen the Tower School scientists enjoy a wide range of activities, including meiosis, fertilisers, decay, and creating our own planet.

Lantern are starting to think about what makes a planet and what they would like to include on theirs. Well done to Lantern!

Question of the week: Will your planet need grass?

Citadel explored plant diseases and how to stop or prevent them. The students then researched what fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides are and how they work. Well done to Citadel!

Question of the week: Can you overuse herbicides and pesticides?

Steeple watched a timelapse clip on decay and looked at the oranges that had been left on a windowsill for a year. They compared the two types of fruit and discussed why they looked so different.

Question of the week: If there was no decay, what would happen to the Earth?

Lighthouse worked on homeostasis and how the body regulates itself. The class now understands what happens if the body cannot regulate itself. Well done to Lighthouse!

Question of the week: Can you live without a pituitary gland?

Obelisk continued their work on adaptations and why some species mimic others. The class found out that hoverflies are not wasps, even though they look like them. Well done to Obelisk!

Question of the week: Why are some people afraid of wasps?

Spire and Martello looked at how meiosis works and why it is so important. The class completed their understanding of this challenging topic and now knows the link between meiosis and reproduction. Well done to Spire and Martello!

Question of the week: Why do we not all look the same?

Fun fact: You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching television.
