Home Events & Celebrations This week in English
This week, Turret and Pagoda have been reading the poem ‘Out of the Blue’ by Simon Armitage. The classes have been learning about the context of the poem- the 9/11 terrorist attack. They have thoroughly enjoyed learning about this event in history. We viewed images and the classes asked many compelling questions. We wrote creative sentences using similes, adjectives, adverbs and alliteration inspired by a collection of photos from the event. The classes displayed a great deal of empathy, compassion and concern for the experiences of the people involved.
Over the course of this half term, Lattice and Citadel have been exploring poetry from different time periods. They have read and analysed poems from authors such as Carole Ann Duffy, William Blake, Shakespeare and Hilaire Belloc. They have successfully identified different literary features such as personification and metaphors and even written their own witty poems in response. This week, pupils considered whether songs could also be poetry and analysed the lyrics to ‘Seven Devils’ by Florence and the Machine. The pupils were able to use their skills to independently identify the literary features and explaining their own interpretations of what the lyrics could mean.
