13th February 2026

Preparing for Adulthood

Last Friday, as part of Preparation for Adulthood, pupils from Martello and Obelisk enjoyed a guided tour of the London Stadium. The trip got off to an exciting start with VIP treatment for the school mini van. We parked exactly where the away team coach usually parks, right outside the players’ entrance to the stadium, which immediately made the experience feel special.

We were welcomed by an incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide who shared fascinating insights into the history of the London Stadium, West Ham United, and his role as a football commentator. We learnt about the stadium’s role in the London 2012 Olympic Games and how its development was part of a huge investment in the Stratford area. It was hard to believe that the site was once marshland and the largest disused-goods yard in Europe, nicknamed ‘Fridge Mountain’.

During the tour, pupils visited the Royal Box, where seats can cost up to £900 on match days, and even touched the seat used by Queen Elizabeth II during the Olympic Games. We also learnt about how the stadium is improving its carbon footprint, how the grounds staff maintain the pitch to such a high standard and how security is carefully managed during major concerts and on match days.

To round off the experience, we explored the players’ changing rooms before walking through the players’ tunnel and stepping out onto the pitch in an empty stadium, which was a memorable moment for everyone.

I was so proud of our pupils throughout the day, watching them engage so well, ask thoughtful questions, and follow guidance from the tour guide. It was an engaging and inspiring visit that all thoroughly enjoyed, and I look forward to updating you on our future trips.
